Khwab Hai Deewane Ka | Diary of Alienated Desires

Krishna Baldev Vaid (1927-2020) was an avant-garde Hindi fiction writer and playwright renowned for his experimental and iconoclastic style. Born in Dinga, in what is now Pakistan, he and his family moved as refugees during the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent to Delhi, an experience that profoundly shaped his literary worldview. In 1959, Vaid moved to Harvard University, where he completed a dissertation on Henry James. Infamous for breaking every rule in Hindi and famous for not winning prizes, he published about forty books, including novels, short stories, plays, essays, and diaries written in Hindi. This film is based on his entries from his first dairy, Khwab Hai Deewane Ka, (Dream of a Mad Lover) written during his years teaching English literature at the State University of New York at Potsdam from 1966-85. The diary presents a fragmented, introspective narrative that delves into the emotional and intellectual struggles of a diasporic Indian writer confronting alienation, identity, and creative tension in the cold, insular landscape of America. Through these entries, Vaid attempts to understand himself, navigate isolation, and make sense of his literary journey. He writes with raw honesty about his inner conflicts, disappointments, and philosophical reflections, often blurring the boundaries between reality and dream. His language is poetic, ironic, and occasionally surreal, capturing his fears, failures, and fleeting moments of clarity with striking candor. The film excavates footage from Vaid's home archive and interweaves it with sequences filmed by Ashish Avikunthak during the final year of the writer's life, alongside materials drawn from the filmmaker's own personal archive. Bringing these disparate archives into dialogue, the film constructs a cinematic meditation on memory, exile, aging, artistic creation, and the elusive boundary between lived experience and dream.
