Excretapolitics

Creative Documentary by Yoel Meranda, 114 min., France/Turkey/Germany, 2023

In Cape Town's informal settlements, created to segregate Black and Coloured people during Apartheid, the government never built a sewage system, hence the absence of sanitary flush toilets. Each resident must therefore devise an individualized solution to dispose of their excrement. "Excretapolitics" is an impressionistic documentary composed of portraits of South Africans facing this infrastructural injustice. Each episode consists not only of the depiction of their toilet-related problems but also of their daily lives and a space in which they express themselves on the issues that matter to them personally.
