Greater Freedom Lesser Freedom

Documentary film by Kristina Konrad, 2000, DE/UY, 83 min, german/spanish, ST german/spanish/english

Inge Viett and Marìa Barhoum.

At the end of the sixties two women set out, along with many others, on an inspired and uncompromising revolutionary path to change the way the world was run. The two women: Inge Viett in Western Europe, Germany, and Marìa Barhoum in South America, Uruguay.

The film explores moments in the lives of these two women, and searches for a common thread in their mutual utopia, a vision under very differing circumstances and on two different continents.

Their experiences tell of a life on the fringe during the last part of the 20th century. They were not on the side of the victors, but lead lives filled with spontaneous resistence, heady adventures full of hopes and grave errors.

Both of them led their lives with contradictions, and are now confronted with giving their lives meaning in a world which has erradicated all contradiction by claiming that only the current system is logical and unchangeable. They find themselves at an age when the awareness of the limits of change is all too present.

Nevertheless, they do not blame the desire for solidarity and collective consciousness for the disappointments that followed.

Press

Gunnar Decker/ Neues Deutschland
Ulrike Borowcyk/Berliner Morgenpost

Petra Groll/ taz Berlin
Gudrun Piotrowski/ Solothurner Zeitung
Peter Wittwer/Basler Zeitung/2001
